Martin Brundle has issued an apology to singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi after an awkward interaction during the Singapore Grand Prix grid walk.
As the clock was counting down to the Singapore national anthem, the former Formula 1 driver quickly approached who he thought was the award-winning artist. “Lewis, wonderful to see you…” he said before realising it was Capaldi’s brother, Anthony. “Oh, you’re his brother?” he said while laughing, and Lewis quickly appeared at the scene. “How are you both?”
After a brief conversation where the brothers confirmed they were supporting McLaren in the race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Brundle was given the three-second warning in his ear to close out the grid walk for the national anthem to take place. “I am sorry I mistook you but lovely to see you on the grid,” he added. As he turned to the camera, Capaldi put his hand out for a handshake, but Brundle had not noticed. Knowing the awkward moment had been caught live on camera, Capaldi shook his own hand in his typical funny fashion.
Capaldi later shared the moment on X with the caption, “B****ed by Brundle.”
Brundle responded with an apology to the singer. “Sincere apologies Lewis, I turned around to the camera with an urgent 3 second count going on in my ears to wind up for the national anthem. Had no idea you were trying to shake my hand. A cardinal sin on my part, which I hope to put right one day. Hope you enjoyed F1.”
McLaren went on to secure the constructors’ championship with a third and fourth-place finish for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in Singapore, leaving the Woking outfit untouchable with 650 points in the standings.
The fight is still on for second in the championship. Mercedes currently sits in the position with 325 points after George Russell claimed victory from pole position and his team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli took fifth. Ferrari follows in third with 298 points, just eight points ahead of Red Bull in fourth with 290 points.
